SLAVKO STOLNIK (1929-1991)

nacque l'11 giugno 1929 a Voca Donja vicino alla città di Varazdin, nello Zagorje croato. Era contadino che già da bambino voleva andare a scuola e dipingeva, però i suoi genitori non avevano i mezzi finanziari cosicchè lui lavorava come minatore e dopo come poliziotto. Lavorava nella polizia nazionale a Zagabria. Poco dopo conobbe Krsto Hegedusic, pedagogo eccellente, e Josip Depolo, critico d'arte, che notarono il suo straordinario talento per la pittura e soprattutto per colori e gli diedero istruzioni sulla tecnica della pittura su vetro. Nel 1955 ebbe la prima mostra a zagabria. Dopo un grande successo, considerato personale quasi sensazionale nel mondo artistico, Slavko Stolnik se ne andò a Parigi per conquistare il mondo. Un contadino non istruito, non abituato alla crudeltà delle grandi città, che già soffriva delle fasi iniziali della schizzofrenia, si perdette totalmente e finì il suo soggiorno a Parigi come vagabondo sotto i ponti della Senna. Nel 1963, tornò a Zagabria e poi nel paese natio. Lì cominciò la terza fase, la più feconda, della sua pittura nella quale tra il 1970 e il 1976 produsse le sue opere più importanti. Dopo questo, rassegnato e malato, smise di dipingere e cominciò a raccogliere erbe medicinali. Non voleva vendere i suoi quadri, li depositò nella soffitta della sua casa e li coprì con delle mine. Nel 1991 morì tragicamente, venne ucciso per interesse personale. Slavko Stolnik, rimane per la sua opera uno dei più grandi espressionisti e coloristi non solo dell'arte naif ma dell'arte in generale.

was born on 11 June 1929 in Donja Voca near the town of Varazdin, Zagorje in Croatia. It was the peasant who as a child wanted to go to school and painting, but his parents did not have the financial resources so that he worked as a miner and later as a police officer. He worked in the national police in Zagreb. Shortly after he met Krsto Hegedusic, excellent teacher, and Josip Depolo, art critic, who noticed his extraordinary talent for painting and especially for color and gave him instructions on the technique of painting on glass. In 1955 he had his first exhibition in Zagreb. After a great success, staff considered almost sensational in the art world, Slavko Stolnik went to Paris to take over the world. An uneducated peasant, not accustomed to the cruelty of the big city, which was already suffering the early stages of schizophrenia, is totally lost and ended his stay in Paris as a vagrant under the bridges of the Seine. In 1963, he returned to Zagreb and then to his home town. Then it began the third phase, the most fruitful of his painting in which between 1970 and 1976 he produced his most important works. After this, resigned and patient, he stopped painting and began to collect medicinal herbs. He would not sell his paintings, deposited them in the attic of his house and covered them with mine. In 1991 he died tragically, was killed for personal gain. Slavko Stolnik, his work remains one of the greatest expression and those not only of art but naive art in general.
